Have fun while it lasts
Summer is here, and I love it.
Earlier this week, as I walked to work, the temperature was perfect. The sun was bright and shining, the Union Square farmers market was ablaze with produce, and girls wearing flip-flops and bandanas were gently caressing peaches. The flower stand was blooming and beautiful, and I secretly noted to myself to slip out and buy some before the day was over.
New York is feeling especially magical this time of year, and I can’t help but feel a subconscious desire to remind myself, every time I pause to take a picture and memorialize the moment, that I must savor it while it lasts.
With every year I age, and every month that passes, and the seasons that slip away, I get this low hum of anxiety that one day this will all be over. And while it may come back again, it is always different.
This feels like a uniquely special summer.
Last Saturday, I saw the sunrise with my friends in my yard after a night of unstoppable joy that the Knicks won the finals. If I had told myself four years ago, before I dated a New Yorker, that I would understand a basketball team so well that I would know their names and strengths and weaknesses, I would have laughed in your face.
Last week, I spent a Wednesday evening after a travel day in the airport with strangers huddled around my phone watching them win game four. It was perfect.
It’s the first day of summer, and the days are warm. In two weeks, I get to one of my favorite places on earth, Rhode Island, with everyone I love, including my very, very, very dear friend Lily, who lives on the West Coast and is making the trip to NYC. It’s wonderful.
Things I plan to savor
My yard and my BBQ. I love to brainstorm with Dylan about what we might eat for dinner and how we will prepare it. The other day he grilled chicken thighs while I made a lovely slaw and aioli for chicken sandwiches and a salad. Tomorrow he plans to grill steak for tacos. What more can a girl want?
Watching Love Island with my friends. What a lovely thing to get to laugh and drink wine while people act ridiculous on national television.
Taking a solo jaunt to the used book shop and grabbing an ice cream from Brown Butter on Tompkins on a particularly hot day.
Soon, so soon, the Kosciuszko public pool will open. I can’t wait to lie in the sun and read a book and not be able to touch my phone while I am there.
Lying out in Herbert Von King Park.
Getting happy hour after work and getting to sit outside.
Swimming in the ocean.
Eating Del’s lemon ice on the beach.
Listening to music with the windows down in Rhode Island.
Going dancing in NYC!
Basically, just summer in NYC.
Anyways, just popping in to say summer is here! And we must savor every moment. Kisses!
